Amritsar is a division of India and the capital city of the Amritsar district.
The city is an important spiritual and cultural destination, as well as home of the famous Golden Temple. The Golden Temple complex also includes a lake, where there is a building called "Darbar Sahib", "the palace of the Lord." This building is formed by a dome covered with golden plates, which shine in the sun. In the area of the temple is not allowed to eat, drink or smoke, both men and women are forced to have their heads covered, bare and washing feet before entering the temple.
The main activities of Amritsar include tourism, handicrafts, agriculture and industries. This city is also known for its cuisine, culture and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which took place in 1919 under British rule.
