Kohunlich

The archaeological site of Kohunlich, belonging to the Mayan civilization is located in the state of Quintana Roo, in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is surrounded by a lush subtropical forest and contains more than 200 remains. The majority of these remains are still covered by the ground and by all kinds of vegetation.

The city had been built with temples, palaces and homes and it was served by a complex system of irrigation and rainwater harvesting. This was an important stop on the route to the south of the Yucatan and to the region of El Peten in Guatemala. The site is popular thanks to the Temple of the Masks, a pyramid decorated with impressive faces of some divinities made by plaster .
