French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic, it is an archipelago surrounded by the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

French Polynesia is formed by 118 islands, some have volcanic origin and others have coral origin. It can be divided into five archipelagos:

  • Austral Islands, the southermost group of islands, with a more recent history if compared to the other groups;
  • Society Islands, divided into Windward Islands and Leeward islands, they are the most popular among tourists;
  • Tuamotu Archipelago, it is not a massive tourism destination, this is why they offer a calmer and more peaceful atmosphere. They are the perfect destination for those who love scuba diving and snorkelling;
  • Gambier Islands, all volcanic islands;
  • Marquesas Islands, the northernmost islands famous thanks to their mountain ranges and their steep cliffs.

These islands boast a mild climate, refreshed by Pacific trade winds. French Polynesia has an interesting undersea ecosystem, in fact its crystal-clear waters host a beautiful barrier reef inhabitated by several colourful fish. Those who love scuba diving can admire an amazing underwater world, and swim next to ray, manta ray, sharks, barracudas and sea turtles. Vegetation is characterized by the presence of exotic plants, such as coconut palms, hibiscus and ylang-ylang.

French Polynesia is also home to ancient traditions and customs. One of the main artistic expression is dance on drum rhythm. It is used to say hello, goodbye and to celebrate someone. Furthermore, the inhabitants often build wooden statues, called Tiki, which are inspired by traditional or symbolic motifs.

Its economy is mainly based on tourism, very developed in Tahiti and Bora Bora, and on pearl cultivation.

During a holiday in French Polynesia do not forget to taste the traditional local dishes, such as Tahitian raw fish and po' e.
