This Mexico tour is a holiday that will allow you to unravel the mysteries of the Mayan civilization, a real journey through the history, art and culture of this land, a gem of Central America. During this vacation you'll also have the chance to get an insight on modern Mexico and some of its most picturesque colonial cities. This trip and holiday will really be hard to forget!
Here are the highlights of the journey:
Breakfast. Morning departure to Chichen Itza, the largest Mayan city in Yucatan, declared Unesco world cultural heritage. The city, established around 400 AC, was occupied by the Toltecs around the year 1000 and later abandoned around 1250. Many buildings still show the splendour of Chichen, including the great pyramid known as "El Castillo", the Temple of the Jaguars, the Observatory etc.
Lunch. In the afternoon continue to Merida, stopping enroute for a visit to the beautiful Franciscan convent in Izamal. Arrival and check in to the hotel.
Morning departure to Uxmal site: along with Palenque and Chichen Itza, it's the apogee of the Mayan civilization. The complex, established between 600 amd 950 AC, is full of temples, pyramids and splendid palaces whose facades are decorated by wonderful stucco friezes.
Lunch. Arrive in Edzna: tour of the beautiful site, in particular the Temple of the 5 Storeys. In the afternoon travel to Campeche and tour of the city. Overnight in a hotel.
Travel to Palenque, one of the most important and spectacular Mayan archaeological sites, established around 1500 years ago and mysteriously abandoned at the end of the 9th century. Lunch. The afternoon will be spent visiting the ruins, sorrounded by a very thick jungle: the numerous monuments include the Temple of the Inscriptions, built on a series of pyramids and tomb of famous king Pakal, the great palace with the tower, probably an observatory, the Temple of the Cross. Overnight in a hotel.
Breakfast. Morning departure to Chicanna, situated in the Rio Bec area, full of small archaeological sites. Lunch. Arrival in the afternoon and, time permitting, first tour of the archaeological area. Overnight in a hotel.
Breakfast. The day will be spent visiting Chicanna archaelogical sites, Xpuhil and Becan situated within Calakmul Biosphere. The ruins show the wealth and high degree of craftmanship of Mayan architects and artisans, especially in the decoration of the monumental portals and decorative masks. Lunch. Overnight in a hotel.
