Lithuania is a country in Northern Europe, member of the European Union, overlooking the Baltic Sea and with Vilnius as a capital city. The Baltic coast is sandy, while moving towards the east, the land becomes hilly with the high presence of woods, although forests are fewer than in neighboring Latvia and Estonia because of land use for agricultural activities is more significant.
The river Neman, after crossing the southern part of Lithuania, forms the border with the Russian exclave of Oblast 'Kaliningrad, to throw itself into the Baltic Sea. The most important lake is Lake Vystitis. The climate is continental cold, with harsh winters and cool rainy summers. In general, Lithuania is a very wet country.
As for the environment, the largest protected area of the country is Dzūkija National Park, along the banks of the Neman River. The Lithuanian economy is the least developed among those of the Baltic states, although it has seen a slight increase in recent years. The main sectors are furniture factories, textile and food industries, of which an important place is occupied by fishing, developed in the coastal city of Klaipeda. The agricultural sector is very rooted in the territory, in particular as regards the production of rye and flax, cattle farming, forestry and dairy products.
The country has a developed road network and is a transit area between Central Europe and Northern Europe. It is in fact crossed by the so-called Via Baltica highway linking Warsaw with Helsinki via Kaunas, Riga and Tallinn. During a vacation or a tour in Latvia not to be missed is certainly the capital Vilnius, full of cultural stimuli, churches, museums and monuments that recall the history of the country.
For those who love nature, the Curonian Spit with its green landscapes is particularly interesting, while the Hill of Crosses is a popular pilgrimage site for religious tourism near the city of Siauliai. Finally, do not miss the national parks, such as Žemaitija National Park and Aukštaitija National Park.
