Banyuwangi

Banyuwangi, whose name in Javanese means "fragrance water", is located on the far end of Java island.

It is surrounded by mountains and forests on the West and sea on the East. It is a perfect starting point to discover the volcanoes of the zone and it is a strategic point to connect Java with Bali.

Thanks to its location, on the route Giava-Bali, Banyuwangi has developed a rich and heterogeneus culture, meeting point of the Javanese, Balinese and Madurese cultures.

In particular, specific theatral practices and dances have been developped in this area. The most famous are Gandrung and Punjabi (or Bhangra).
The first one is a dance dedicated to love and courting, performed by young; the second is a male dance, performed by the farmers to celebrate the start of spring.
