The long geographical isolation of the continent has allowed its evolution which is so extraordinary and very different compared to other countries of the globe. Alice Springs - Kings Canyon - Watarrka National Park
    Day 11

Departure to Kings Canyon along Larapinta Drive, through the West MacDonnell Ranges. We suggest a stop to explore Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Serpentine Gorge, Ormiston Gorge (a longer and more demanding route, along the Namatjira Drive). Beyond the historic town of Hermannsburg, home to an Aboriginal community, you enter the Mereenie Loop Road, a road used by Aboriginal people and experienced bushmen to reach the Kings Canyon faster.

Only recently has the local Aboriginal population granted permission to travel it. Along the way a magnificent setting: Gosse Bluff, a crater formed by the fall of a meteor millions of years ago. The Aboriginal legend of course is different: during a dance of the Ancestors held on the Milky Way a mother put her baby in the cradle nearby. Accidentally he fell to Earth and was covered with soil and vegetation. Researches of the baby were pointless and still today the Morning Star, the Mother, and that of the Evening, the Father, wander in search of the child.

It's an aboriginal reserve closed to tourism, but with a bit of tact you can access it without problems. If the sun is in the right position and the light does not play bad jokes, you'll feel like you're crossing a mystical wonderful lunar landscape. Arrival at Kings Canyon before sunset, do not miss the magic of colors of the evening on the Canyon, along the shortest route within it, leaving the longer and more difficult one for the following morning.

In case of closure of Meereenie Loop Road or conventional car rental, you will need to take the Stuart Highway and turn on Lasseters Highway to reach the Kings Canyon following the Luritja Road (470km ca / 7 hours). Accommodation at Kings Creek Station, in Safari Cabin B & B overnight stay (1 night).
