    Day 10

Full day excursion to the temples of Angkor: the largest archaeological site in the world, where 276 monuments of primary importance were classified. Among the several worth visiting, you should not miss a visit to the fortified town of Angkor Thom with its imposing walls and the beautiful doors erected in the late 12th century by the great King Jayavarman the VII. He also ordered the construction of the Bayon in the center of the fortified quadrilateral. The Bayon is the most enigmatic and fascinating of all the temples built by the Khmer.

Reliefs of enormous realism and expressive power encircle 54 towers-sanctuary. At the top of each of them there are four huge stone faces, oriented according the cardinal points which project the image of the bodhisattva Lokeshvara. The images that everyone is looking for, and that have created the real myth of Angkor, are located behind the 3.200 m long wall of sandstone that contains Ta Prohm. It is the great Buddhist monastery that Yayavarman VII consecrated in 1186 and that the archaeologists have deliberately left in the state in which it was found.

Giant trees arise between the maze of the towers-sanctuary, huge roots wrap the galleries, dense shrubs sprout from the roofs of each building and the visitor is not more able to distinguish the work of man and the creations of nature. The most celebrated temple is surely the one of Angkor Wat, the undisputed architectural and artistic masterpiece of Khmer.

Its external perimeter measures 1.800 x 1.300 m, and the central sanctuary has an area of 215 x 186 m. It ends with the elegant profile of the five towers-sanctuary that design the landscape. The 1.200 sqm of beautiful bas-reliefs offer a spectacular testimony of a sublime figurative art. This temple was built when in Italy the cathedral of Pisa was consacrated and in Paris Notre Dame was being built. It is the emblem of Cambodia and also the symbol of the magnificent South-East Asian Middle Age.

    Day 11

    Breakfast at hotel.

Full day visit of the temples. One of the oldest sacred buildings of Angkor is the Prasat Kravan, built in 921: five elegant sanctuaries dedicated to the worship of the god Vishnu. They are built in brick and lined up on a base face to the East.

Here the brick was widely used for building in the 952 Mebon, the temple located on a artificial island in the middle of the basin of the Eastern Baray. Only nine years later the king Rajendravarman erected the Pre Rup, the imposing temple mountain, that presents the warm colours of ochre.

The impressive Buddhist sanctuary of Prah Khan, the temple of the "Sacred Sword", the monastery of Banteay Kdei, the "Citadel of Monks' cells", the enigmatic and spectacular sacred basins of Neak Pean, the "the entwined snakes" temple, the pool of ablutions public and the Srah Srang date back to the reign of Jayavarman VII.
