Pretoria & Soweto Historical Day Tour in South Africa

Your guide will meet you at your hotel at 08:00 AM. The itinerary for the day will depend on whether your accommodation is located in Johannesburg or Pretoria. Our first stop in Pretoria is the Union Buildings. This acts as the seat of the Government of South Africa and also the place where Nelson Mandela lay in State for three days after passing away in 2013. It also saw the inauguration of Mandela as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. A nine metre high statue of Mandela was erected here after his passing. Enjoy wonderful views of Pretoria.

After this educational experience we make our way to the Voortrekker Monument. Here we will delve into the rich history of the Voortrekker people and learn more about the role they played in the colourful history of our great nation. 

From here we make our way to Soweto. Here we visit the only street in the world housing two Nobel Prize winners in Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. We visit Nelson Mandela's former house. During our visit we will gain some knowledge into the homelife and history of this great man. After this emotional visit we have lunch at a local restaurant in Vilakazi Street (own expense).

After lunch will visit the striking Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial, situated in Orlando West, Soweto. It serves to commemorate the role of the country's students in the struggles against apartheid and in particular the role played by the school children who took part in the Soweto protests of 1976. Our last stop for the day is the Regina Mundi Catholic Church. Regina Mundi is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa. The Latin 'Reginae Mundi' means "Queen of the World" and refer to the Virgin Mary. The church was built in 1961 and officially opened on the 24th of July 1962 by Johannes Baptista Montini, a cardinal of Milan.
