Niue is an island located in the Pacific Ocean; this country is an Associated State with New Zealand since 1974.
Niue is one of the world’s biggest coral islands; its coast presents rugged cliffs of limestone, while the inland is characterized by a central upland. The island is surrounded by a wonderful coral reef inhabited by colourful fishes. Niue boasts a tropical climate with two main seasons: a hot, sultry and rainy season, from November to April, and a fresh and dry season from May to October. From November to mid-May, tropical hurricanes are possible and common.
Local flora and fauna are very particular and characteristic. The tropical vegetation is so lush, that some areas result impenetrable. Birds are the most abundant animals on the island; while sea is inhabited by several and colourful tropical fishes, but especially by katuali, a poisonous endemic maritime snake; it only rarely attacks humans. Furthermore, its waters are also home to humpback whales and dolphines. In order to protect local fauna and flora, some national parks and natural reserves have been established, such as Huvalu Forest Conservation Area, in the southern-east part of the island.
Niue island offers several ways to enjoy fun and relaxation, in spite of its small extension. Some of the most popular sports regard water activities, such as diving, snorkelling, swimming, fishing trips, canoes and whale watching, during the migration period (from June to November). On the mainland it is possible to enjoy amazing hikes to discover the local vegetation, explore quaint natural caves and enjoy bike excursions.
Once you are on the island, Alofi is worth a visit. It is the capital city and a picturesque village characterized by the presence of many traditional places and wonderful beaches, such as Utuko and Omahi. Limu Pools is another unmissable spot, for those who love snorkelling. This location boasts unique landscape decorated by caves, coral reefs and verdant vegetation. Finally, Niue also boasts historic and cultural sights, such as Peniamina’s Grave. According to the legend, it is the grave of the first Christians on the island.
