Tour of colorful Chiapas in Mexico
This unforgettable tour of Chiapas in Mexico will make you discover a region with a thousand faces, far from the classic tourist destinations.
The landscape, the clear sky, the animals, the often indecipherable silence of the natives: all this gives the places a special atmosphere and make this stage a "special episode" of every trip to Mexico. Every corner of the region is a testimony of culture and traditions, of religion and history, of charm and mystery.
Visiting Chiapas means "living another Mexico", that is touching a still uncontaminated and authentic part of this country, which allows visitors to rediscover ancient Mayan traditions, ancient flavors, aromas and colors that give very strong emotions, often contrasting, but that leave an indelible mark in the memory.
Discover with us all the must-see places, including the indigenous communities of Zinacatan and San Juan Chamula, the Canyon of the Sumidero, San Cristobal de las Casas, the ruins of Palenque and the Lagoons of Montebello.
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the airport for boarding a domestic flight to Tuxla Gutierrez. Arrival and reception by our staff, then departure for Cañon del Sumidero, a gorge created millions of years ago by the Rio Grijalva, with its red high-cliff walls up to 1000 m, which will be visited on board the fast boats to Chicoasen dam that delimits the perimeter. Visit the rural village of Chapa de Corzo, an authentic icon of the Chapaneca culture. Next transfer to San Cristobal de Las Casas and hotel accommodation for the next 3 nights. Evening available.
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the visit to the indigenous communities of Zinacatan and San Juan Chamula, where you can still breathe the air of "real Mexico", with the inhabitants still wearing the typical clothes of the area. Visit to the church of Juan Bautista, where there are no desks and no normal functions, as the local population sits on the floor intoning prayers and religious songs.
Next return to San Cristobal de las Casas, for a guided tour of the town's historic center, founded by Diego de Mazariegos, which gave it the name of "Villareal de Chiapa de los Españoles", later modified. In the streets the good smell of freshly ground coffee lingers, between the colorful and renovated houses respecting the unmistakable style of Chiapas. Back to the hotel and evening available.
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the visit to the El Chiflon Waterfalls, formed by the San Vicente River, which plunges into the forest at different points (the highest is 70 meters), forming natural pools of turquoise blue water.
Next transfer to the Montebello National Park, to visit the famous lakes, which are part of a network of 59 lagoons that have formed over time due to the melting of the rocks. Montebello is the most beautiful lake area in Mexico and owes its fame to the different shades of the colors of its waters, which are caused by various factors including the type of backdrop, vegetation and the refraction of light. Next return to San Cristobal and free time available.
Breakfast at the hotel and check-out, departing for Palenque. On the way there will be a stop at the Agua Azul Waterfalls, immersed in the Selva, where there will be the chance to take a refreshing swim. Continue to the historic Mayan city of Palenque, and visit the magnificent archaeological site, one of the most fascinating Maya cities in Mexico, where the pyramids and temples sprout among the dense network of trees, illuminated by the tropical sun that makes them cream colored.
The city reached its apogee under the domination of the Pakal King, who managed to exploit its strategic position making it a thriving and important center of trade between the Peten region, the Chiapas highlands and the Grijalva valley, partly linked by the Rio Usumacinta that divides Mexico from Guatemala at this point. Next transfer to the hotel in the center and accommodation in a double room. Evening available.
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the visit to the archaeological sites of Bonampak and Yaxchilan, both reachable only by taking the Rio Usumacinta, which delimits the territory of Mexico and Guatemala respectively. At the end, return to Palenque and transfer to the ADO bus station, located in the center of the town of Palenque and departure by ADO GL bus (Gran Lusso category) to Playa del Carmen. (Night trip).
