Lesotho - Useful information for your trip

Lesotho or Kingdom of Lesotho is a country in Southern Africa, a small enclave in the Republic of South Africa. It’s a landlocked country, nestled among Drakensberg mountains and characterized by a temperate climate due to its altitude.

The capital city of Lesotho is Maseru. Child mortality is extremely high and health conditions are dramatic due to malnutrition. Vegetation is very scarce in this almost tree-less country, covered in grasslands.

Fauna is also very limited because of the country's small size, altitude and scarce presence of diversified habitats. On Drakensberg mountains lammergeyers, typical birds of the mountains in Ethiopia, and the bald ibis can be found, both endangered species.

Lesotho is one of the least developed countries in the world. Most of the population works in the agricultural sector even if only a little more than 10% of the land is cropland. Agriculture merely consist of subsistence farming and is not enough to satisfy the country's needs. Livestock is more thriving, counting on the significant presence of cattle and sheep and excellent grasslands.

The industrial sector is almost exclusively based on extractions due to the presence of many diamond mines. Tourism is developing thanks to national parks, canyons, rare plants, rock paintings and even ski resorts such as Afriski.
