Fiji - Useful information for your trip

Fiji islands are an archipelago in Oceania and an island country of the Pacific Ocean. They are made up of around 322 islands, 106 of which inhabited, and 522 islets. The two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are inhabited by around 87% of the overall population. The capital city is Suva.

The islands are mountainous and covered by tropical forests. The archipelago is shaped like a horseshoe and is of volcanic origin, with many limestone deposits. Coasts are flatter than the inland. The highest point is mount Victoria or Tomanivi (1324 m) in Viti Levu, the only island which is crossed by significant rivers, such as Sigatoka and Rewa.

The climate is subtropical, hot and humid, with heavy rainfalls from November to April, especially in the eastern areas, more exposed to trade winds. There are many differences of climate within the country: the eastern area is humid, storms are sudden and frequent, while the western area is hotter and drier.

The fauna on the island is mainly imported, while some indigenous bird species are extinct. Of all the original mammals, only bats have survived. Nowadays the islands feature wild dogs, cats, pigs, goats, mice, turtles, sea snakes. Marine wildlife is also rich and comprises many species of fish, coral, sponge, ray, dolphin and whale.

Economy is mainly based on the cultivation of sugar, coconut palms and exotic fruit, while rice, cassava and potatoes are grown for domestic use. Livestock is scarce, while the production of timber for domestic use is important. Fishing is developing. Mining activities produce gold, manganese, copper and silver. Tourism is also growing.

Fiji islands are the perfect destination for a cruise or a dream holiday sorrounded by nature or lying on the stunning beaches of the archipelago.
