Uxmal
Uxmal is a maya archaeological site in the Yucatan peninsula. It is located 78 km from Mérida and 170 km from Campeche. Uxmal has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Uxmal, that in the maya language means "three times built", was been well maintained, considering it has been covered by a lush vegetation until the 19th century, when some archaeologist discovered the site. It was restored by the mexican government in 1927 to prevent possible collapses.
The site is a perfect sample belonging to the maya architecture. It is possible to match only by beautiful archaeological site of Palenque. The Puuc style of maya architecture predominates.
Some of the main constructions of the site are: the Adivino (the Pyramid of the Magician), the Nunnery Quadrangle, the large Ballcourt for playing the mesoamerican ballgame and the Governor's Palace.
