Saba is a small island located in the Caribbean. It has a volcanic origin and is characterized by the presence of Mount Scenery, a 887m high volcano. The lush vegetation is mainly composed by ferns forest and mango trees. Saba’s plant and animal wildlife are protected and preserved by a non-governmental organization called Saba Conservation Foundation, which has devoted a part of the island’s area to a reserve named “Elfin Forest Reserve”.
The coastline is not really cozy due to big and shaped rocks, which cover the littoral zone. They provide a suggestive and picturesque landscape, but not a suitable place for swimming or maritime activities. Saba was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, but the Dutch were the first to establish settlements in 1634. They created “The Bottom” and “The Settlement”. The first one is the capital city of the island, the most populated village and home to administrative and governmental buildings.
On the island it is possible to visit some museums, amazing natural environments, take part in local festivals and discover typical traditions and customs. Mount Scenery is one of the main sights, this volcano attracts several trekking lovers, once the peak is reached it is possible to admire the Elfin Forest Reserve and enjoy an amazing breath-taking view of the entire island.
Finally, Jo Bean Glass Art Studio and Harry L Johnson Museum are interesting museums. The first one allows you to discover the colourful studio belonging to a local artist and its techniques. The second, located in a beautiful building, shows step by step the development pattern of the island. Here it is possible to admire vintage pictures of Dutch royalty, Saba’s first telephone and much more.
