Bhutan - Useful information for your trip

Bhutan is a small country located in the Asian continent. It doesn't have any access to the sea and is situated on the foothills of the Himalayan range. Its territory is mainly characterized by the presence of mountains, influencing weather conditions.

The south of the country, more precisely the areas beyond 2000, m boast a tropical climate, and are the most inhabited zones; between 2000 m and 3500 m above sea level, there is a temperate climate, while in the highest areas there is an alpine climate and the population is characterized by nomads, breeding sheep, yaks and cattle.

Bhutan takes much care in the safeguard of its territory. This is why only eco-tourism is allowed within the country: nothing has to cause danger to the natural environment. In addition, the tourists' number is restricted by the capability of tourist accommodations. 

Bhutan is rich in breath-taking landscapes, characterized by high green mountains and wide valleys. Also the Jigma Dorji National Park is amazing, being home to some endangered animal species.

Finally, Bhutan also provides several charming and big cities, such as Thimphu, the capital. Here, it is possible to admire the Clock Tower Square, the heart of the city, the dzong, a combination of fortress and a monastery, the library, the painting school, the Folk Heritage Museum and the district of Motithang. It is located on the top of a hill and overlooks the city, offering a breath-taking view. Other attractions are the National Memorial Chorten, the SAARC Building, a big modern palace in Bhutanese style; Changlimithang Stadium, the national stadium and the Changangkha Lhakhang, an ancient and typical temple.
