Slovakia - Useful information for your trip

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe with Bratislava as a capital city. The Slovak territory is mostly mountainous, with the Carpathians that extend for almost the entire northern part of the state. Among these mountains, the highest peaks are those of the Tatras. The nation's highest point is Mt. Gerlachovský štít, located at 2,656 meters.

Major Slovak rivers are the Danube, the Váh and Hron. The climate varies according to altitude: in the flat area, where the capital Bratislava is located, the climate is generally continental, while in the mountains the temperatures are more rigid with frequent snowfalls.

Regarding the environment, there are nine national parks in Slovakia: Tatra National Park, Low Tatras National Park, Velka Fatra National Park, the Slovak Karst National Park, Poloniny National Park, Mala Fatra National Park, Muránska planina National Park, Slovak Paradise National Park and Pleniny national Park.

The forests consist of conifers, especially spruce. In Tatra and the Carpathians there are bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, otters, minks and foxes, while in rural areas deer, pheasants, partridges, ducks, geese, storks, grouse, eagles and vultures are widesperad.

As for the economy, since the Second World War to the present, the country has seen a substantial progress in chemical industry, electrical engineering, textile manufacturing, heavy industry, foundries, mechanical, heavy chemical industry.
