Haiti is an American country that occupies the western part of Hispaniola island, the eastern being occupied by Dominican Republic.
Its territory is mainly made up of jagged mountains, among which Pic la Selle (2,680 m) is the highest, small coastal plains and river valleys. The northern part of the country is dominated by the Massif du Nord, an extension of the Cordillera Central, a mountain range located in Dominican Republic, and Plaine du Nord; the central part is characterized by the presence of two big plains and mountain chains; finally, in the southern part it is possible to find Plaine du Cul-de-Sac and other minor mountains. The most important place for plantations and agriculture is Plaine de l’Artibonite.
Haiti boasts a tropical climate, characterized by two main seasons: the dry and the rainy one, which lasts from April to October, while the hurricane period starts in June and ends in November. The rainfalls only last a couple of hours, thus the sun is always guaranteed. The best period to visit Haiti is from December to March.
The landscape of the peninsula is really evocative and includes white sandy beaches, colourful and perfumed flowers, crystal-clear sea and a lively undersea life. Moreover, Haiti also offers several interesting tourist attractions and monuments. The capital city, Port-au-Prince, is a picturesque village that hosts many small and colourful houses, traditional markets where it is possible to buy handicraft products and nice districts. Citadelle Laferriere is another unmissable spot. It is a fortress built in 1805 and declared World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1982. Haiti also boasts interesting natural parks and museums, such as Guahaba Museum, where it is possible to discover the natives’ lifestyle and traditions.
Because of the earthquake and the diffusion of cholera in 2010, Haiti’s cities have been subject to strong damages that caused the loss of its cultural and artistic heritage. Still today people are working to restructure the peninsula. These natural disasters provoked many changes in Haiti. Indeed, nowadays, tourism is drastically decreased and the country has become the poorest in the Americas. Furthermore, every day there are criminal and micro-criminal actions.
Haiti is for sure an unmissable destination, but it is advisable to entrust only certificated and reliable travel packages.
