Belarus - Useful information for your trip

Belarus is a country in Eastern Europe with Minsk as a capital city. It has no access to the sea and is crossed by three major rivers, the Neman, the Pripyat and the Dnieper. Its highest point is the Dzjaržynskaja Hara (Mount Dzerzhinsky), with its 345 m. The territory of Belarus is rich in forests, peat deposits, small quantities of oil and natural gas, and consists mainly of plains and low hills.

The climate is continental with large variations in temperature. The flora in the forests to the north, includes pine, fir and birch trees, while in the south it includes oaks, elms and white beech. The fauna is characterized by the presence of wild boars, moose, lynx, deer, wild horses, stoats, otters, minks, beavers and bisons.

The economy of Belarus is based primarily on underground resources, the soil is not very fertile and therefore less suitable for agricultural cultivation, although the production of flax is fairly developed. The economic development of the country is growing, thanks to the industrialization in mechanics, chemistry and in the textile sector. Near the capital Minsk there are also industries related to microelectronics and information technology.

In 1986 the Belarusian southern regions were damaged by the accident at Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which caused serious damage to the economy from radioactive contamination to crops and livestock, as well as a sharp decline in exports. Currently 5% to 7% of public expenditure in Belarus is spent for various forms of compensation for damage done by radiation, such as pollution of the food chain.

During a trip or vacation in Belarus it is interesting to visit the capital Minsk, where modern buildings contrast ancient ones, allowing you to retrace the troubled history of this country. Not to be forgotten is then also the Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. Another interesting town is Grodno, near the border with Poland, or the many castles, including those of Novi Zamak and Mir, one of the most beautiful castles in Europe
