Slovenia is a country in Eastern Europe with Ljubljana as a capital city.
Slovenia is a country in Eastern Europe with Ljubljana as a capital city, facing the Adriatic Sea to the south-west. It's situated between the Alps and the Balkan peninsula and most of the land lies above 200 meters above sea level. It can be divided into three zones: the karst plateau, between Italy and Ljubljana, the Alpine and pre-Alpine area and the Pannonian plain to the east, close to Hungary.
The karst plateau consists of limestone rocks subject to the karst phenomena, which is the formation of underground cavities where often streams flow. Slovenia's highest peak is Mount Triglav (2864 m) in the Julian Alps. The four most important rivers of the country are Isonzo, Sava, Drava and Kolpa. The largest lake is Cerknica, other important lakes are also Bohinj and Lake Bled.
The climate is sub-Mediterranean, alpine in the mountains and continental in the highlands. The environment in Slovenia is characterized mainly by hardwood forests with oak and beech trees. The fauna is rich and includes deer, squirrels, black bears, wolves, lynx, wild cat, grouse and pheasants. Numerous are also the fish species and in some rivers crayfish still live.
As for the economy, the industrial sector is the predominant one. In particular steel and wood industries are very developed. Growing are also the electronics, transport and household electrical appliances industry. Agriculture occupies a very small portion of the GDP and is mainly devoted to wheat and corn cultivation. Very popular is the import / export business thanks to the strategic position of the country.
Tourism is primarily of mountain type, although many visitors come to the seaside area, despite the low extension of the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Among the major touristic areas, Postojna Cave and Lake Bled must be mentioned.
