Moldova - Useful information for your trip
Moldova is a country in eastern Europe with Chisinau as a capital city.
Moldova is a landlocked country in eastern Europe. Its capital is Chisinau. Its territory coincides almost entirely with the region of Bessarabia, a flat area between the rivers Prut and Nistru (Dniester). The plain is dotted with some groups of hills that make up the extreme southwestern area of the Sarmatian platform and then merge into the Carpathians. To the north is a flat area with low hills, partly covered with forests and where the cultivation of cereals thrives.
The central part of the country is occupied by slightly higher hills. The highest point of Moldova is located in this area and barely reaches 430 meters. The two most important rivers are the Prut and Nistru. The climate of Moldova maintains continental characteristics, but it is strongly influenced by the proximity to the Black Sea, with cold winters and hot summers.
The flora and fauna are very rich; there are about 6,600 species of plants and 1,350 species of flowers. The most typical alpine flowers include yellow poppy, the columbine of Transylvania, the saxifrage and, in the mountains, the edelweiss.
As for the economy, the industry employs only 20% of the workforce, while agriculture occupies about a third, also given the fertility of the soil. GDP and human development index are among the lowest in Europe, even though the country is growing. Agriculture produces wheat, corn, oats, tobacco, sugar beets, soybeans and barley; more marginal productions are sunflowers, hazelnuts, apples and fruit in general. Quite widespread are also both breeding aimed at the production of meat and the production of dairy products and finally beekeeping.
During a trip or vacation in Moldova you shouldn't miss the capital Chisinau, with its parks, its cathedral and its historical museum. But also interesting are the tours of the wineries and the city of Tiraspol, rich in history, with its open-air museum dedicated to communism.
