It's a devotional ritual, where you donate to the monks to earn merits and good fortune for your future life.

The historical center of Chiang Mai is located in a great valley, which is near Mount Doi Suthep (1600 m high), that towers on the city. You'll climb on the mountain to reach one of the most famous and sacred sanctuaries of the whole country: the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, built on a 1000 m altitude.
Legend says that the place where it was built was located thanks to a mythical white elephant who was carrying a sacred Buddha reliquary on its back. The reliquary was buried where now there's the golden Chedi at the center of the sanctuary, one of the most beloved religious imageries of Thailand.

You'll leave Chiang Mai to travel through the northern areas of the country, bordering both Laos and Myanmar.
They're inhabited by different etnicithies, among which the Lahu are the most numerous. Their settlements are made of small bamboo houses. To the Lahu, the animist and ancentral forces of nature's elements are still a great influence in their culture.
The mountains and the thick tropical vegetation are the landscape that surround us in Wiang Pa Pao, where the local market has become an important crossroad of trading exchanges between the mountain tribes.
Stop at a small restaurant along the way to have a lunch based on local cuisine.
Right before reaching Chiang Rai, we'll visit Wat Rong Khun, a stylistical hybrid of both modern and traditional architecture. Its huge proportions and elegant decorations made it one of the most popular photo destination among tourists.
You'll leave the city to travel north, close the country's border. You'll see a great plane with rice and tropical fruit plantations, crossed by the Mekong affluents, the great Himalayan river that travels through most of South-East Asia up to the Chinese Sea.
