Tajikistan is the smallest of the central Asia countries, it has some of the highest peaks such as the Imoil Somoni (7495 meters) and the biggest glacier outside the polar regions (Fedchenko glacier).
More than 50% of the country is at more than 3000 meters and 93% of is made of mountains. The main centers of the region, Dushanbe, Khujand and Penjikent all have a great heritage of the persian culture from the past.
What to see in Tajikistan: Pamir
The Pamir is a huge region of the central Asia between 3000 and 4000 meters. This plateau is near two other big mountain regions, the Tien Shan adn the Karakorum. Pamir is also home to one of the highest highways of the world. Built in the ‘30s and now mainly in ruins the Pamir Highway is a perfect spot to go trekking or mountain bike.
Among alpine sceneries and many alpine lakes the path in this “rooftop of the world” is one of the most fascinating high-altitude treks that you can take.
Like many of the near regions (Kyrgyzistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan) it’s a scarcely populated area where the population is friendly but not accustomed to meet strangers.
These mountains where also home to the “Great Game” conflict, mainly based on espionage, between Russia and United Kingdom in the first years of 1800.
Fann mountains
The Fann mountains are one of the main attractions of the area. Particularly known in Russia as one of the main destinations for alpinism are perfect for all the lovers of trekking and mountain bike tours. You’ll be able to admire many small villages, where time has stopped and the local population still lives of agriculture and many lakes are set in the alpine sceneries.
The lakes Alaudin, Kulikalon, Allo and Isknderkul are some of the beautiful of the region, you can’t miss them.
Iskanderkul Lake
This lake is set at 2000 meters and takes the name from Alexander the Great. Known as one of the most beautiful lakes in the area its shores have a great variety of birds.
Yagnob Valley
The Yagnob valley is not only an extremely fascinating place, it’s also one of the few places in the world where the Sogdian language is still spoken. The inhabitants of the valley, arrived here after the arabian conquest are completely isolated from the rest of the world for six months because of the extreme weather and therefore they mantained a culture uninfluenced by the nearby regions.
