Weather in Mexico: when to arrange your trip

Mexico's climate is hot and humid, but each region has its peculiarities. Discover the climate of each area of ​​the country, and what is the best time to visit them.

Mexico is a large and vast country, this is why the climate strongly varies from place to place within the country. Generally, the weather is warm and humid in the Yucatan region and in Riviera Maya, while in the north it is drier and more arid. The rainy season lasts from May to October. The rainfalls usually take place during afternoon hours and continue for a couple of hours at most.

The northern part of the country, close to the United States, is characterized by cold and rainy winters. Also the altitude can influence the climate. Moving towards the south, near Guatemala and Belize's borders, the climate becomes tropical.

Mexico can be visited during the whole year, but it is necessary to pay attention to the climate of each area you'd like to visit.

Baja California and Gulf of California

The area surrounding Baja California is characterized by a mild climate on the western coast, here the temperatures never get higher than 25° C. The sun shines during the whole year and the rainfalls are poor. Moving toward the region's southern part, called Baja California Sur, the maximum temperature never goes over 32° C.

The coast of Gulf of California is hotter than the western coast during the summer, the average temperature is around 35° C.

Cabo San Lucas, the famous city located in the southernmost corner of the peninsula, boasts almost the same climate as the rest of Baja California Sur. Winter and spring are sunny, with possible rainfalls from September to October.

Eastern Coast

The Eastern Mexico (the areas facing the Gulf of Mexico) boasts warm winters, and very humid summers; rainfalls are frequent from May to October.

Mexico City, the capital, is located at 2200 m above sea level, its altitude strongly influences its weather. The winter is sunny and dry but during the night the temperature decreases considerably: in February and March the temperatures can also reach 4° C. During spring, from April to May, the average daily's temperature is around 25° C but during the night it can reach 8/10° C.Rainfalls are really frequent during summer months: it rains heavily almost every day for some hours.

The South and Yucatan Peninsula

Some central and southern zones of the country, as Guadalajara, located at 1500 m above sea level, but also Tuxtla Gutierrex and Palenque, feature a strong temperature range: temperatures go from 6° C at night to 25° C during the day.

In Chiapas rainfalls are abundant till November. So, be careful if you are planning a trip!

In southern cities the climate is hot all year round. It is dry from December to April, but really hot in May. During the rainy season it can rain every day, especially in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Chiapas.

Riviera Maya and the most famous destinations, such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and Tulum can be perfectly visited from February to April, when it never rains and the maximum temperature never goes over 30° C.

The best period for a trip

The average temperature of Mexico is around 23/25° C and the climate is pleasant during the whole year. The best period to travel to Mexico is from December to April, because from May to November it is more probable to find bad weather with rainfalls and downpours.
